How to Configure LTI 1.3 Consumer Settings

Summary

LTI 1.3 Consumer Settings let you register and configure the connection between KnowledgeCity and an LTI 1.3 platform, so that content can launch securely between the two systems. You supply the platform's identifiers and OpenID Connect endpoints, and enable the optional grade-reporting services. This article explains each setting and how to complete the configuration.

Introduction

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is the standard that lets learning platforms integrate with one another. LTI 1.3 Consumer Settings hold the details KnowledgeCity needs to trust and communicate with an LTI 1.3 platform: the identifiers that name the connection and the OpenID Connect URLs used to authenticate launches.

These settings are used by administrators who are connecting KnowledgeCity with an external LTI 1.3 platform. They solve the problem of establishing a secure, standards-based link so that users can move between systems and, where enabled, so grades can flow back automatically.

Key Concepts

  • LTI 1.3: the version of the Learning Tools Interoperability standard that uses OpenID Connect and signed messages to secure launches between platforms.
  • Platform ID: the identifier (issuer) of the LTI 1.3 platform the connection is associated with; it names which platform this configuration trusts.
  • Deployment ID: the identifier that distinguishes a specific deployment of the tool on that platform, so a single platform can host more than one connection.
  • Authentication request URL: the platform endpoint used to begin the OpenID Connect login when a launch is initiated.
  • Access token URL: the platform endpoint from which KnowledgeCity requests an OAuth access token to call the platform's services.
  • Public key URL: the platform's public key (keyset) endpoint, used to verify the signature on messages the platform sends.
  • AGS (Assignment and Grade Services): the LTI service that lets grades and scores be reported back to the platform's gradebook.
  • Basic Outcomes: an outcomes service for reporting a result back to the platform, used where AGS is not the reporting method.

Steps to Follow

Opening the LTI 1.3 consumer configuration

Open the LTI configuration for the account and start a new LTI 1.3 consumer connection. You will complete the identifiers and endpoint URLs below, then save the configuration.

Entering the platform identifiers

Provide the identifiers that name the connection to the platform:

  • Platform ID: enter the platform's issuer identifier exactly as provided by the platform.
  • Deployment ID: enter the deployment identifier for this specific connection on that platform.

These values are supplied by the LTI 1.3 platform you are integrating with, so confirm them with the integrating party before saving.

Entering the OpenID Connect endpoints

Enter the platform's URLs that KnowledgeCity uses to authenticate and verify launches:

  • Authentication request URL: the platform's login/authorization endpoint that begins the launch.
  • Access token URL: the endpoint KnowledgeCity calls to obtain an access token.
  • Public key URL: the platform's public key (keyset) endpoint used to validate signed messages.

Enter each as a full URL. As with the identifiers, these endpoints come from the platform's LTI configuration.

Enabling the grade services

If grades should be reported back to the platform, enable the appropriate service:

  • Enable AGS (Assignment and Grade Services) to report scores into the platform's gradebook using the LTI Assignment and Grade Services.
  • Enable Basic Outcomes to report a result back where the Basic Outcomes service is used instead.

Enable only the service your platform supports and expects; confirm the reporting method with the integrating party.

Saving and verifying

Save the configuration once the identifiers, endpoints, and any grade services are set. Then perform a test launch with the platform to confirm that authentication succeeds and, if you enabled a grade service, that a result is reported back before relying on the connection in production.

Conclusion

LTI 1.3 Consumer Settings are where you establish a secure, standards-based connection to an LTI 1.3 platform by entering its Platform ID, Deployment ID, and the authentication request, access token, and public key URLs, and by enabling AGS or Basic Outcomes for grade reporting. Save the configuration and verify a launch so that content and grades move reliably between KnowledgeCity and the connected platform.
