How to Use the LTI Import Template

Summary

The LTI Import Template lets you download a structured file from the LMS and use it to configure multiple LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) connections in one pass instead of registering each one by hand. You fill the template with the details of the LTI tools you want to set up, then bring it back into the LMS to create them in bulk. This is the fastest way to stand up many LTI integrations for an account at once.

Introduction

LTI is the standard that lets learning platforms integrate with one another, so external systems can launch into KnowledgeCity or KnowledgeCity can connect out to external LTI tools. Each LTI tool is registered against an account and identified by a platform and a client ID, and it carries a status you can monitor.

The LTI Import Template is aimed at administrators who manage these connections and need to set up more than a handful at a time. Rather than opening the create-tool flow repeatedly, you download the template, enter the connection details for every tool in a single file, and import it. It solves the problem of slow, error-prone one-at-a-time registration when onboarding many integrations.

Key Concepts

  • LTI tool: a registered Learning Tools Interoperability connection for an account. The import template is used to create these in bulk.
  • Import template: the standardized file you download from the LMS. It contains the column headers that map your data to the fields the LMS expects for each LTI connection.
  • Platform: the LTI platform a tool is associated with. Each row in the template describes a connection for a given platform.
  • Client ID: the identifier issued for an LTI connection, entered per row so the LMS can distinguish each tool.
  • Status: the state of a tool once it exists in the LMS, which you can review after the import completes.
  • Bulk configuration: setting up many LTI tools together from a single file, instead of registering each one individually.

Steps to Follow

Download the import template

From the LMS, download the LTI Import Template. The downloaded file already contains the column headers that correspond to the details the LMS needs for each LTI connection, so your data lines up with the expected fields when you import it back.

Fill in the template

Open the template and add one row per LTI tool you want to configure. For each connection, provide the identifying details the LMS uses to register a tool, including its platform and client ID, along with any other columns present in the template. Keep one connection per row so each tool is created distinctly.

Review your data before importing

Check that every row is complete and that the platform and client ID values are correct for each connection. Because these values identify the LTI tool, confirm them with the integrating party where possible so the connections resolve to the right external systems.

Import the completed template

Bring the completed file back into the LMS to run the import. The LMS reads each row and creates the corresponding LTI tools for the account in a single operation, rather than requiring you to register them one at a time.

Verify the imported tools

After the import finishes, review the account's registered LTI tools. Confirm that each expected connection now appears with the correct platform and client ID, and check each tool's status. Verify a launch before relying on the connection in production.

Conclusion

The LTI Import Template turns LTI setup from a repetitive, one-by-one task into a single bulk operation: download the template, populate a row for each connection, import it, and verify the results. For administrators onboarding many integrations for an account, it is the quickest and most consistent way to get LTI tools registered and ready to use.
